Commentary
Observations:
‘All in’ Democrats lead Republicans in ‘support’ by eight (8%) percentage points.
Stunning result reflects that Americans are ready to support ‘obesity’ health care. An absolute majority says health care isn’t working for them.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger gets majority support for Constitutional change allowing him to seek the Presidency.
Majority of ‘decided’ respondents say “No” to drunk driving Canadians driving on U.S. mainland roads.
Hillary Clinton ‘confidently’ leads Democrat contenders, while Mitt Romney has narrow lead over Republican ‘horse race’.
Democrats hold clear majority of Independents/Other (60%).
Commentary:
There can be no doubt that health care is an enormous political issue in the United States. The Democrats are having a more realistic conversation on this issue than the Republicans are.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has nearly 30% support from Democrats to permit him to run for President, while one half of Americans don’t want the Terminator’s Canadian friend Premier Gordon Campbell driving on streets and roads in the U.S. The drinking driving question actually provoked as much talk about the Mexican border. How’s that for provocative?
Democrat contender and former first lady Hillary Clinton is so comfortable in her own skin, and is running such a satin smooth campaign that she is willing to make some sacrifices in order to keep the Democratic race appear cohesive. Real leadership. The top seed from either party to become the next President of the United States.
Contrary to some US mainstream news, which suggested Barack Obama’s support was getting a little ‘softer’, we didn’t find this at all. Instead, we do see Joe Biden making a concerted effort to go from second tier candidates to first tier. Hillary Clinton is licking her chops at three good choices for Vice-President. I suspect Biden is having fun, and has finally decided just to be who he is, and it is paying handsome dividends.
The Republicans have a good field of candidates. Mitt Romney has to be taken seriously. He is smart, charismatic, and well, look at him! Mitt Romney has great leadership credentials. Right now not only is he the top Republican seed (thanks in part to Fred Thompson). The American Rock ‘n’ Roll band The Killers are the best Rock band in the United States (maybe the world) (they played a University of British Columbia where the crowd went so crazy dozens of people were nearly trampled). This Romney campaign for President is massive and the messaging out of this world.
I’m not gay, but if I were I’d go for Mitt.
John McCain will remain in the hunt for the Republican nomination right to the end. Persians are pretty cool people, and love American ‘stuff’ but if they screw around with nukes and McCain becomes President of the United States, Iran will end up on the planet Mars (if Duncan Hunter is Vice-President, make that Uranus).
Rudy Guiliani is an excellent candidate (my daughter visited New York and says its “like an entire city has become Disneyland-its so safe and clean-while Vancouver continues to be dirty and unsafe”), but there are too many ‘other’ Republican candidates (who are going to ultimately have a say in who wins) who are staying away from him. Mike Huckabee is interesting (and looks like Henry Fonda-another movie star).
Fred Thompson has probably attended all of two barbecues, but the anticipation of his entering the field has donors lining up. Thompson is money, money, money (I’ll guess 25 million in two months-see how we do). I can hear the Conservative cash registers now. If Thompson is half as good as advance billing he will fall back one third, if he is better than advanced billing watch for him to hit the pack and hunt for the lead.
The Republicans have all the horses they need to contest the Presidency, if they can keep the nomination process competitive but not murder one another. There is more testosterone flying around this leadership contest than on the Seattle Seahawk defence, so this latter condition will not be easily met.
In contrast, the Democrats, at least right now are being guided by the ‘groove’ of Senator Clinton who looks great and sounds better, and is impacting on her colleagues very positively.
